Wondering how old your child must be to stay at home alone? In Michigan, there is no specific age as a matter of state law, though your county or municipality may have a local law or ordinance setting a specific age. A preteen child is the guide, but not the requirement. Instead, the family court will look to the child's maturity, the home and neighborhood, prior practices of being left home alone, prior behavior problems, any health or safety problems for the child, how long the child is left home, whether the parents agree and any other factor reasonable under the circumstances.
